Thank you for your inquiry to stay at Cincinnati’s Ronald McDonald House. We hope to assist your family during this difficult time.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Cincinnati (RMHC) historically has considered whether to admit a family to the House while his/her child is receiving medical treatment at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center or another area hospital contingent upon family members’ criminal history backgrounds. That inquiry has previously taken place as an informal questionnaire when the family member(s) arrived at RMHC for registration. RMHC now realizes that the timing of that background history process was less than optimal to both the family members and RMHC. Therefore, to avoid any unnecessary misunderstanding or inconvenience going forward, as well as to ensure the safety of all our guest families, RMHC has decided to formalize the criminal history background process by doing a formal criminal background check through a third party on every guest age 18 or older who wishes to stay overnight at our House.
The background check is primarily screening for convictions for violent crimes, sex crimes and drug charges. RMHC does, however, reserve the right to deny access on any grounds. We work on a seven-year statute of limitations unless the crime was exceedingly violent or directed toward a child.
Please don’t assume the worst; you are welcome to call the House, ask to speak to a manager, and discuss your personal circumstances. Most traffic violations will not be seen as reason for denial. A denial is not made lightly.
We don’t do a credit check or see any credit history information; only information regarding criminal history can be viewed. Only the family member with the conviction is not allowed to stay in the House; the rest of the family is still welcome to stay. Anyone denied access to the House is provided with a letter and a copy of the criminal report.
In addition to the background check, the registration form and other documents need to be completed, as well. It will make your check-in process go more smoothly if you can complete these in advance, but that’s not required. The background check authorization form, however, is required to be completed in advance. Please ensure that each adult staying in the House has a photo ID on-hand when checking in.
Should you refuse to complete the background check, we will have no choice but to deny your request. Should any of your background checks come back with negative feedback, we will have a discussion with you to determine how we move forward.
Completing this documentation does not guarantee that you have a room. Families can call us at 513-636-7642 seven days in advance to get on our request-for-lodging list. You can print the forms below or contact us to mail the forms to you. Once your information has been processed and a room becomes available, you will be called.
Background check paperwork only needs to be completed once. RMHC will redo the background check if the family returns and it has been more than six months since we have done the check.
If a family needs to proceed urgently, their social worker is welcome to call RMHC and let us know. We will work with the family to do the background check during the check-in process. Should you have Medicaid or any other insurance, we would appreciate it if you could contact them to see if they would be able to cover your cost of staying at Ronald McDonald House. Some (like Kentucky Medicaid) will pay, but only if you obtain prior approval from them. No family will ever be turned away due to an inability to contribute toward the House, but third-party payments (like insurance) significantly help us continue to provide a home away form home for families like yours.
