Birthday in a Box

Thank you for your interest in providing a Birthday in a Box for a sick child or caregiver! No one wants to spend their birthday away from home – or worse yet, in the hospital. Unfortunately due to long illnesses, that is exactly what many of our families are forced to do. Your special gift of birthday party supplies will go a long towards making the day a little more special.

An ideal Birthday in a Box would include all the supplies required for a small party of 4 or more. Make it fun and be creative. We have children and parents with us of all ages and backgrounds, so you really can’t go wrong in choosing any color scheme or party theme. Your box is sure to please someone.

This is a great activity for youth/teen groups. The boxes can be prepared in your own setting and dropped off at the house any day between 9 AM and 9 PM. These guidelines will help you plan a successful experience.
  • Please use a re-closable, stackable box no bigger than 2’ x 3’ (copy paper sized)
  • Clearly label each box indicating the intended recipient’s age and gender
  • List not only the contents of the box, but the number of each item (6 plates, 6 cups, 1 streamer, etc.)
  • Identify the party theme (ie. SpongeBob, adult Over the Hill, sports, springtime) or color (red, white and blue or plain purple)
  • Only include non-toxic, non-perishable materials
  • Don’t forget to fill out a donation form when you’re here
Here are a few ideas to get you started, but your ideas are welcome! (It is not necessary to include all items.)
  • Boxed baking mixes (cake, cookies, brownies, etc.)
  • Icing (tub, squeeze tube, etc.)
  • Sprinkles or other cake decoration
  • Cupcake papers
  • Candles
  • Paper plates, cups, napkins
  • Plastic cutlery, tablecover, centerpiece
  • Simple party games
  • Party hats, crowns
  • Filled or unfilled goody bags
  • Appropriate small toys or party favors
  • Streamers, confetti, banners, stickers or other decorations
  • Tape
  • Birthday card, invitations, thank you notes
  • Non-latex balloons
  • Wrapping paper, gift bag, bows
Please do not include:
  • food or candy outside of that mentioned previously.
  • anything that is potentially toxic or perishable.
  • any previously opened packages or loose plates, cups, cutlery, etc.
  • anything sharp, fragile or breakable.
  • any small toy that could present a choking hazard.
  • latex or Mylar balloons
  • piñatas
For the safety of our guest families, anyone in your group who is coughing, feverish, has a runny nose or has been exposed to a contagious disease should not visit the House or be involved with preparing the boxes. We have many children in residence who are in isolation and have immune-suppressed bodies that cannot fight even the simplest cold.

Sincerely,
