Hot Socks

Thank you for your interest in providing a homemade heating pad for our kids. There’s nothing more soothing than putting a little heat on a sore spot, especially in chilly hospital rooms. This is a quick and simple activity even for little ones, but gives long lasting, reusable comfort to a sick child.

This is a great activity for youth/teen groups. The socks can be prepared in your own setting and dropped off at the House any day between 9 AM and 9 PM. These guidelines will help you plan a successful experience.
  • Please use only NEW, CLEAN socks.
  • Fill the foot of a white tube sock (knee length) with rice or other filler.
  • Tie the end of the tube sock into a knot. Please make sure the knots are secure.
  • Use a second sock as a cover for the first. The second sock can be as colorful and playful as you like. (The outer sock helps keep the first sock clean since it can be removed for washing. It also helps protect skin from burns if the filler gets too hot.)
  • To each Hot Sock, attach a note that lists the type of filler material and fragrance (or list as unscented), as well as the directions for heating (below).
  • Don’t forget to fill out a donation form when you’re here
Filler Ideas:
  • Uncooked (not instant) rice
  • Wheat
  • Feed corn
  • Buckwheat hulls
  • Barley
  • Oatmeal
  • Beans
  • Flax seed
  • Cherry pits
Fragrance ideas (optional):
  • Add spices, herbs or essential oils with soothing, relaxing scents and mix with your chosen filler.
  • Lavender, rose petals, ground cloves, nutmeg, ginger, rosemary, cinnamon, crushed mint, chamomile, sage, peppermint ‑ to name just a few.
For the safety of our House children and parents, anyone in your group who is coughing, feverish, has a runny nose or has been exposed to a contagious disease should not visit the House or be involved with this project. Some of our children are in isolation or have immune-suppressed bodies and cannot fight even the simplest cold. We encourage frequent hand-washing during assembly.

Thank you again for your generous offer to provide a little comfort to our children.

Sincerely,

Lisa Davis
